R290, also known as PROPANE is a natural, hydrocarbon refrigerant used in many refrigeration and air-conditioning applications. When compared to standard HCFC and HFC refrigerants, it does not contain fluorene and hence it has lower environmental effects. It has zero ODP (Ozone-Depletion Point) and very low GWP (Global Warming Potential). It also has excellent thermodynamics properties to be used as a refrigerant.
Nowadays, propane is used as an alternative to R404A and R407 refrigerants which have high environmental effects. The use of R290 is growing, it already has a strong presence in most of refrigeration systems especially in the European region. After the Kyoto and Montreal protocols have been signed against environmental influences, propane became a preferred refrigerant in the refrigeration market. Please refer to the below given charts.
|Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP)||0||0|
|Global Warming Potential (GWP)||3||3922|
